- O-Ring Degradation (Critical): The O-ring prevents atmospheric air from entering the torch. A cracked or hardened O-ring will cause the Venturi effect to suck in ambient air, instantly turning the tungsten electrode black and causing severe weld porosity. Always inspect the O-ring when changing tungsten.
- Thread Stripping: Do not use pliers to over-tighten the back cap. If the tungsten isn’t clamping, the collet has lost its spring tension. Forcing the back cap will strip the internal brass threads or crack the torch head.
- Confined Spaces: The medium back cap provides good tungsten economy, but in very tight angles, it may physically interfere with the workpiece. Switch to a ‘Short Back Cap’ and cut the tungsten down to avoid breaking the cap’s plastic shell.
