🔧 Tungsten Grinding & TIG Arc Stability Guide (Essential Reading)

  • Critical Rule: Never Grind Tungsten Horizontally! Grinding tungsten needles across the wheel edge leaves circumferential scratches. During arc strike, electrons emit erratically across horizontal ridges, causing severe arc wandering and deflection. Always grind longitudinally (lengthwise) along the axis so grinding marks run parallel to the needle, ensuring a laser-sharp, stable arc.
  • Preventing Blue/Black Oxidation: If the tungsten tip turns black or deep blue after extinguishing the arc, it has oxidized from premature atmospheric exposure. Increase post-flow shielding gas time on the welding machine (recommend 3 to 5 seconds) so argon continues protecting the hot electrode until it cools to a bright silver finish.
  • Contamination Protocol: If filler wire touches the tungsten or the tip dips into the weld pool, stop welding immediately! Continuing to weld with a contaminated electrode causes severe tungsten inclusion defects. Break off the contaminated tip and regrind a clean taper.
  • 2.4mm Amperage Matching: Φ2.4mm cerium tungsten electrodes perform optimally between 150A and 250A DC. Excessive current (>280A) melts the tip into a sphere, while insufficient current (<50A) degrades arc stability. Use 1.6mm electrodes for low-amperage thin sheet welding.
